Two Lankans held for heroin smuggling

Indian Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials arrested two SriLankan Tamils, including a school teacher, and seized from them 1.5kg of heroin concealed inside rice cookers and electric ovens. Theseized drug is estimated to be worth Rs 1.5 crore in theinternational market.

Acting on a tip-off, the NCB officials on Friday night interceptedShanmuganathan, a Sri Lankan, at Chennai Airport just as he was toboard a flight to Sri Lanka. They inspected his hand baggage andfound 750 gm of heroin worth Rs 75 lakhs concealed inside anelectric oven and rice cooker.

The NCB officials took him into custody before handing him over tothe airport police.

The police team learnt that he had been sent to the city by anotheragent, who is active in a smuggling racket in the city.We recovered a mobile SIM card from him and retrieved the mobilecall list. The police mounted a close surveillance at a fewsuspects, whom Shanmuganathan had been talking to before he enteredthe airport, a senior NCB officer said.
